Chapter 3
The Stability of Ancient Egypt: Flood and Sun
In Chapter 3 you will learn about the major periods in ancient Egyptian history and culture. Many of us are familiar with ancient Egypt through popular figures such as King Tut and Nefertiti, but these monarchs came late in ancient Egyptian history and even the iconic pyramids at Giza were constructed about 1,200 years before they reigned. The ancient Egyptian civilization was so old that it could have conducted archaeological studies of its own, distant past.
To put this in perspective, think about the fact that our country was founded in 1776, Ponce de Leon reached Florida in 1513, and Julius Caesar was born in 100 BCE. These major events are only 240, 503, and 2,116 years ago, respectively. From the beginning of the ancient Egyptian Predynastic Period to the end of the Late Period is 5,168 years. A textbook chapter can hardly scratch the surface of this amazing and abiding civilization but it can get us thinking critically and creatively about the artifacts which illustrate how they chose to uniquely "process and document the human experience" (Stanford Humanities).
Before taking the quiz, read Chapter 3 and take some time to engage with the following materials. Make sure you have internet access so that you can take advantage of all materials and their embedded elements. These do not replace reading the chapter but they can help you to better understand the material, study for the quiz, and gain ideas for later assignments that you will create on your own.

Closer Looks. These tours give you an in-depth look at key works that are figures in your book or that simply augment the concepts your book presents. They allow you to zoom in to see finer levels of detail and generally provide a more well-rounded experience of the meaning of the works. The tours explain and illustrate nuances that can be difficult to see or understand from print images alone.
