Information for Students

Textbook:

No textbook required. All learning materials available in class and on Canvas course site.

Rocketry Kit: A rocketry kit will be provided for you. These kits are provided by our NSF grant and source from Estes Rocketry.

Lab Notebook: A lab notebook will be provided for you.  If you misplace the lab notebook, you will be responsible for replacing it at your own cost.  They can be purchased at the Santa Fe College bookstore.  ISBN: 978-1-930882-50-8

Course Description:

This is a project-based course with three experiential learning project options: guitar building, robotics, or rocketry. Students will gain knowledge in the areas of Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics while building a guitar, robot, or rocket. The course aims to emphasize collaboration with industry partners to expose students to careers available in STEM fields, and to connect students with industry so they obtain firsthand knowledge of requirements for developing a successful career.

Course objectives:

Students will be able to demonstrate the following:

Scientific Reasoning (SR):

  1. An understanding of key science concepts associated with the course.
  2. The ability to engage in a scientific reasoning process (steps of the scientific method, induction, deduction, hypothesis testing, etc.).
  3. The proper use of the scientific method (data analysis / mathematical tools).
  4. The ability to interpret results and communicate their knowledge in both oral and written form appropriate to the discipline.

Information Literacy (IL):

  1. Determine the extent of information needed.
  2. Access the needed information.
  3. Evaluate information and its sources critically.
  4. Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
  5. Access and use information ethically and legally.

 

Class participation, late assignment, and make-up exam policy:

  • Because it is necessary to be present for each stage of building to successfully complete the final project, attendance will factor in class participation grades.
  • Attendance is required and will be recorded every time we meet.
  • Please notify your instructor as soon as possible if you cannot attend due to sudden illness, family emergencies, and so forth.
  • If you miss class with a valid excuse you might be provided alternative materials to complete.

Grades are assigned as follows:

  • Online assignment due dates are firm. Attendance is required and will be recorded every time we meet.
  • Students are expected to maintain a digital portfolio of their work as a final assessment. It will be factored into the final exam grade.
