Chemistry is one of the core subjects for science stream students. Even if you are preparing for competitive exams like NEET or IIT JEE, you must focus on scoring good marks in the Class 12 boards exam. Your final marks in the boards’ exam are crucial for upcoming career prospects too. You should not take it lightly. Board exams are descriptive types of exams. You must be good at writing descriptive answers that are comprehensive and accurate. Students preparing for competitive exams have the habit of solving multiple-choice questions, therefore, they usually miss out on the habit of writing theoretical answers.

Chemistry is a scoring subject. The only reason why some students find it difficult is because they keep avoiding it. If you put in little hard work, you can score very good marks. Study with full concentration and maintain consistency. You can score good marks in the class 12 boards exam. Here, we discuss important topics and strategies that will help you to score good marks in the class 12 chemistry boards exam.

  • Study plan: Before you make your study plan and routine, you must be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest with yourself and identify your weakness. This will help you to assign the amount of time for each topic. Suppose, you are not confident with mathematical calculations. In this case, you must pay more attention to physical chemistry and allot more time to this topic in your study plan. You might need to brush up on your mathematical skills before you start with physical chemistry. Similarly, you need to memorize a lot of things in inorganic chemistry. Questions are asked directly from this section, so make sure to score high.
  • Syllabus: Always refer to your syllabus published by the CBSE and stick to it. Since students refer to other reference books, there are chances that they get deviated and invest time in less or unimportant topics. You have limited time for preparation. Use this time wisely. Do not deviate from your syllabus. The best way to stick to your syllabus is to study from NCERT books. CBSE considers NCERT books as standard textbooks for board exams. Therefore, the content of NCERT solutions class 12 chemistry is according to the CBSE syllabus. Most of the time, questions are directly asked from the exercise questions of NCERT books. Try to solve each question from all the chapters in the chemistry NCERT book. Here, we list down the chapters and their weightage in the class 12 chemistry board exam:

Chapters

Weightage

Physical chemistry:

Solid-state, solutions, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, surface chemistry

Inorganic chemistry:

P-block, f-block, d-block elements, general principles and processes of isolation of elements, coordination compounds

  • Understand the exam pattern: Analyze the type of questions asked in the board exam. Try different types of questions too. This will make you confident and will prepare you for unpredicted questions. The best way to understand exam patterns is by referring to model test papers on the CBSE website. For example, direct questions like IUPAC names of compounds are asked from inorganic chemistry. Similarly, identify the important topics too. Refer to previous years’ question papers. Try to solve at least 5 previous years’ question papers. You will realize that there are some topics from which questions are asked repetitively in board exams. Identify such topics and pay extra attention to them. Understand the right way to answer a question, especially if the answer is descriptive. Try to understand how comprehensive or precise your answer must be, depending on the marks it carries. Analyze the solutions of model sample pacers by CBSE, and understand what are the important steps and procedures to include in your answers.
  • Important formulas: Answers in chemistry should be written with chemical reaction formulas. You must write the chemical reaction in answers where possible. Chemical reactions fetch marks in answers. Also, make sure to write the chemical reactions in a balanced form. Balancing the chemical reactions is sometimes difficult, for complex reactions. Practice balancing the chemical reactions, without looking into your textbooks. You must remember each chemical reaction from your NCERT chemistry book. Make a list of all the important chemical reactions and stick this list near your study area. You must go through these reactions every day so that you do not forget them. Physical chemistry has many formulas too. Make a list of those formulas and stick it near your study area. Spending a few minutes on these formulas daily will help you memorize them. While solving questions from physical chemistry, make sure that the units are correct. Many students don’t notice the units and proceed with the calculation and hence end up with wrong answers. Your time during your exams is limited. You cannot afford to solve a question multiple times. Make yourself accurate in answer-solving capability, so that you get the right answer on the first attempt. For this, it is also important to read and understand the question very well.
  • Revision is the key: A good preparation can fetch unsatisfactory results if revision is not done thoroughly and properly. You must reserve the two or three weeks before your exam, only for revision. Do not start any new topic during the last moments before the exam. Also, students revise only before exams. Make it a habit to revise regularly and do not rely on the last moment. After you complete a chapter, revise it. Then revise the same chapter again after a week and assess your knowledge. Check how many concepts you still remember and what topics require your attention. Timely revision is necessary to avoid the last moment’s panic. The best way to revise is through solving questions. You will find out your weak areas. If you are aware of your weak areas, you will have sufficient time to improve your mistakes.
