Steps to get a green card application for marriage

If you want to live with your spouse living in the USA, then you would have to get a marriage green card application in the first place. There are mainly three basic steps that you need to follow to get a green card for marriage. The steps are as follows:

  • Establish your relationship:

When it comes to getting a marriage green card, the US government gives utmost priority to the legal bond of marriage between the partners. Your spouse, currently living in the US, has to submit the I-130 form to the US Citizenship and Immigration (USCIS) office. It is a part of the formalities that you owe to the Department of Homeland Security. It is the essential criteria to validate your marriage with your spouse in the USA.

There are some aspects of fulfilling the criteria of I-130 between the sponsor and the green card applicant.

  1. You have to pay a government filing fee of $535 in the first place.
  2. You will have to submit proof of your spouse's citizenship in the USA with the help of legal documents like a birth certificate or passport.
  3. The formalities also include your marriage proof.
  4. You would have to submit proofs to prove your marriage legal and authentic with the help of joint bank accounts or pictures.
  5. If any of the spouses have had a marriage before, you would have to make sure that it has been terminated legally.
  • Form filling:

The most important and the best part of seeking a green card for marriage is the application filling procedure. The application filing process varies for different people living in different locations. If your spouse seeking a green card stays in the US currently, then you would have to submit the I-485 form to USCIS, which marks your spouse eligible for a green card. He or she would have to submit the legal documents to the USCIS office in the US. If your spouse lives out of the country, then he would have to submit his legal documents to the US embassy at once.

  • Interview:

The third and last step for getting a Marriage Green Card is the easiest one. The sponsored spouse and the green card-seeking spouse have to sit for an interview in the USCIS in the USA to give the final touch to the process. If your spouse lives outside the country, then he would have to attend the interview alone in the US embassy. After getting the permission to get to the USA, your spouse would get the green card either mailed or in physical terms within 2-3 weeks of the interview.
